Patricia Narayan - Owner of a chain of Restaurants

When you think millionaire, what image comes to mind? For many of us, it’s one who flies a private jet, owns several homes and expensive cars and lives a flashy lifestyle—affording most of it with loads of inherited wealth.

But many modern millionaires started out the hard way, live in middle-class neighbourhoods, work full-time and shop at discount stores like the rest of us. “For the rich, it’s not about getting more stuff. It’s about having the freedom to make almost any decision you want,” says T. Harv Eker, author of Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. Wealth means you can send your child to any school or resign from a job you don’t like.

According to the Merrill Lynch-Capgemini World Wealth Report 2011, the number of Indian millionaires (those who have a net worth of at least Rs5 crore, the equivalent of nearly a million US dollars, not counting the value of their primary residence) had more than doubled to 153,000 in two years.* (And remember, those counted here comprise only those who report their true incomes and pay their taxes.) Anyway, that figure is expected to triple in the next two years, according to a report in The Economic Times.

If more people are getting richer than ever, why shouldn’t you work hard and be one of them? Here, three self-made millionaires share the secrets that helped them get there.

No Guts, No Glory

Thirty years ago, Patricia Narayan hardly seemed on the road to wealth. Just into her 20s, she lived with her two small children and an abusive, alcoholic husband who couldn’t keep his job. “It was miserable and so hard to make ends meet, I returned to my parents’ home and yearned for a better life,” says Patricia. Today she’s a 54-year-old Chennai caterer and restaurant-chain owner.

There was one big reason Patricia pulled ahead of others in her situation: Instead of moaning about her failing marriage, she decided she had to earn for herself and the kids and not be a burden to her family, although both her parents were gainfully employed.

Being ambitious and determined to succeed are crucial first steps. “The biggest obstacle to wealth is fear,” says Eker. “People are afraid to think big, but if you think small, you’ll only achieve small things.”

It all started after friends and neighbours routinely praised her cooking, something Patricia enjoyed. “They relished my pickles, jams and squashes. So I began to sell some to them,” she says. Next, she opened a food-kiosk at Chennai’s Marina Beach. “It was a whole year’s struggle getting the licence, but once I started, I made sure my home-made cutlets, sandwiches and other snacks were the best available there,” says Patricia, who worked 16-hour days to cook, pack and sell, with the help of her husband and five employees. In a few years, she was also supplying food to the canteens of three big organizations, including a bank.

Meanwhile, Patricia’s life wasn’t a bed of roses. Her marriage unravelled and she got a divorce in 1991. In 2004, her daughter Prateepha and son-in-law died in a road accident, soon after they were married. After that Praveen, her son, resigned from his merchant navy job to join the business.

Realizing that Prateepha had died in an accident-prone area with no nearby medical facilities, Patricia started a free ambulance service to cover that stretch of highway.

“All along, it was hard work that kept my mind off the problems in my personal life,” she says. In 2006, Patricia opened Sandheepa, her own restaurant, which has since grown to 19 outlets in Chennai.

In 2009, Patricia won a coveted Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Woman of the Year Award. “When you are determined, the odds are in your favour,” she says. “I constantly think about how to do better, and that usually gives me good ideas.”

Limbo skating - Guinness record small boy

Medvin Deva might be just an eight-year-old but he has already earned the Guinness world record for limbo skating at a height of nine inches for a distance of 50 metres. At a recent press conference organised at his school to showcase the fete, Medvin talks about how he copes with studies and skating.

Skating from the age of three, Medvin’s daily routine involves waking up at 5 am and starting practice by 6 am. After this, he heads to school where he enjoys studying and playing like any other child his age would.

Medvin set the record early this year on February 22 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium skating rink. Cheered on by his schoolmates, and under the directions of chief coach of Anna Nagar Roller Skating Rink K P Unnikrishnan, he went on to get the record. Judges from Tamil Nadu Book of Record and Asia book of Record judged the attempt. The previous record had been set by a nine-year-old Rohan Konane of Belgaum back in 2009.

R. Medvin Deva wants his father to buy him a cycle in return. “He doesn’t understand the importance of the achievement,” smiles his father Raju. As of now, all Medvin knows is that “it’s a big award; the world’s biggest.”

Long hours of practice early in the morning, breakfast in the car en route to school from the Anna Nagar Roller Skating Club, bruises on his thighs…it has all paid off, feels Medvin’s father. “I feel proud of him. People ask me why we put in so much effort and what’s the point of attempting to set Records and such,” says Raju. “I really can’t say why except that we feel happy doing this. People recognise Medvin.

Medwin’s father Raju and mother Jasmine have always been encouraging, to an extent that they removed the furniture inside their house to allow Medvin to practice. Medvin says that in the run up to the world record attempt, he had kept away from non-vegetarian and junk food, and celebrated his success with a pizza with his family.

“Medvin’s one of the top rankers in the class. He is punctual to the class despite waking up for skating practice at 5 am. He makes it to the school without taking a day’s leave. We are proud of him as an achiever,” said Emily Titus, principal of CSI Ewarts Matric School.

Both Medvin’s parent and coach lament that there are not enough facilities for skating here, where Medvin can skate on a straight line for 100 meters. They are in search of facilities that will help Mervin set new records for skating over long distances.

Medvin is into the Asian Book of Records for limbo skating over a distance of 45 m. “The previous Record for lowest limbo skating was for 10 inches and 10 m. Our initial aim was to beat that,” explains Raju. “We have also applied to Guinness for a limbo skating Record for 25 m. We hope to receive the certificate soon.” Medvin also aims to set a Guinness World Record for longest and fastest limbo skating. “He will limbo skate over a distance of 60 to 65 m,” explains Raju. The Record for the longest skating will be attempted in another 15 days, he adds. “Space is a constraint. We are looking at a long, level ground. A rough stretch could hurt his legs,” he says

I hope that all this will help him in his college education in some way.”

The Chenab Bridge was originally scheduled to be completed in December 2009.However, in September 2008 it was announced that the Chenab bridge had been cancelled due to fears over its stability and safety.Work on the bridge restarted in 2010 and once construction is completed in 2015 the Chenab Bridge is expected to be the world's highest rail bridge.

The project is expected to be finished by March 2016 and will have a lifespan of 120 years. It will contribute to the economic development of the state and help in providing better transportation accessibility within the state and the country.
